Ailsa Friel’s Biography

Ailsa Friel is from Creeslough in Co. Donegal. In 2007 she graduated from the University of Ulster in Belfast with a Ba(Hons) in Fine and Applied Art. Although she specialised in Ceramics she was always a keen painter and has recently returned to the medium.

After her final show at University, Ailsa was invited to exhibit her work at the Royal Ulster Academy’s annual show. She was awarded with the President’s Prize.

Ailsa has since taken a year out to travel and although her journey had a positive impact on her, she realises even more how beautiful the world is at her own front door.

“My work is a celebration of precisely that, the beauty that almost constantly surrounds us here. How humble yet majestic it all is.”

Ailsa is now living in north County Down where her work pivots between the northwest coast and the northeast.
