Becky Mair’s Biography

My belief in being an artist comes from the natural ability to observe and watch. In observing we see through and into the object. I am searching for a different way to represent the familiar. I have developed my own immediate response to a technique developed by the abstract artist Jackson Pollock, whilst studying his process at University. His unique style has inspired me to produce a fluid, energetic, representational reaction to his work. Working mainly in acrylic paint, ink or domestic emulsion paint; I work directly from the tube or paint pot. Using a stick or tube to flick and direct the paint from a standing position over the paper or canvas.

With my work I am interested in expressing a sense of power, movement, strength, and masculinity whatever the subject matter.

Born in Chatham, Kent. At the age of ten years my father moved abroad and started working in the Middle East, and Africa. I spent the next 15 years commuting between England and where my parents were living. In 1985 I did a Foundation Course at Canterbury College of Art. I then went to live and work in London. Having now returned to Kent, marrying a farmer with whom I have three children, I completed BA Honours degree in 2004 at UCA.
