George Callaghan’s Biography
George was born in County Antrim. He migrated with his family to South Africa at the age of four, returning to Northern Ireland at fourteen. After a year as a box designer, he entered Belfast's College of Art at the age of sixteen on a scholarship to study painting and lithography. He was the youngest student ever to be admitted to the college.
On leaving college he entered advertising and has worked in Belfast, Dublin, London, Melbourne and in Sydney as an art director with leading advertising agencies.
Over the last thirty years George has earned an international reputation, not only a painter, but also as a silversmith, an instrument maker and a harpist.
His studio is in Hobart, Tasmania. However, he returns regularly to Ireland, not only for his art, but also to catch up with the local music scene.
