James May’s Biography
Born and educated in Co.Antrim, Northern Ireland. James has now painted almost continuously for over forty years. Essentially self taught his style has developed from the influence of Irish artists such as Colin Middleton and Spanish artist Antoni Tapies.
The work is moving more towards abstraction, though still retaining a strong sense of subject matter, with elements of landscape, figures, and images on walls. Texture through collage, paint, and many inert materials are central to the work. The painting process he strives for is that of a dreaming childlike vision, applying paint instinctively. The media is mainly hand prepared. Multi-layered surfaces, palimpsests image creating memories different to everyone. Paintings begin life in sketchbooks as line drawings and are worked into larger works in the studio.
