Paula Stanley’s Biography
I received my education in Ireland, USA and England and studied at St
Albans School of Art and the University of Hertfordshire where I obtained an Honours degree in Fine Art.
The sources of my imagery are eclectic and can encompass all aspects of culture and nature, including poetic ideas (spoken and written). The painting process itself is important in that it informs the work as it progresses and this involves notions of identity and difference. The paintings themselves issue from a dialogue between applications of pure colour and vigorous erasures with pallet knives or rags soaked in turpentine. I use oil primarily, because oil allows time for reflection and change and I see in the laying down of oil paint and its solidification almost a geological/archaeological process. There is also a converse to this stratification process in my technique, of scraping and rubbing through in search of revelation.
