Shirley Harrell’s Biography
Yorkshire-born Shirley (nee Crawshaw), moved with her family to Sussex at the age of eleven. She attended Hastings High School for Girls then Hastings Art School. After leaving art school she became a fashion designer and a part-time lecturer, working in London and Manchester.
Marriage in 1962 was followed by a few years of 'retirement' while bringing up her three children. In 1974 Shirley returned to work and in 1978 was appointed Head of Art and Related Studies at the Manchester College of Adult Education. Nine years later she took early retirement to pursue her ambition of becoming a full-time artist. Shirley then moved to the West Country and soon became established as one of the area's most sought after watercolourists. She has held many successful solo exhibitions in London and in other major cities throughout the country. She has exhibited in The Art Gallery, Hillsborough since March 1999. Her work is to be found in many collections both at home and abroad.
